Beyond Textbooks: Financial Literacy
If money makes the world go round, why don’t schools
teach us how to manage it?
At our recent two-part Financial Literacy Workshop, we
tackled this crucial life skill head-on. And let me tell you—the energy in the
room was electric! This was a milestone for us—our largest-ever gathering of
PAP students—and judging by the overwhelming feedback, we struck a chord.
More Than Just Numbers: Why Financial Literacy Matters
Financial literacy is the difference between thriving and
struggling in the real world. It’s the skill that determines whether young
adults build wealth or fall into debt traps. In a world where financial
mistakes can cost years of stress, why isn’t this taught in every school?
That’s why we designed this workshop to be hands-on,
interactive, and deeply relevant—a program where students wouldn’t just learn
about money but learn how to use it wisely.
Money 101: The Lessons Schools Should Be Teaching
We kicked things off by traveling through time, exploring the evolution of
money from barter systems to cryptocurrency. Students even got their hands on
different currency notes to experience firsthand how global economies function.
We broke down essential concepts:
- What is money? (Hint: Not all currency is money, but all money can be currency!)
- Assets vs. Liabilities The secret to why some people retire rich while others stay in debt forever.
- Banking Basics – Understanding transactions, accounts, and digital finance.
- Budgeting 101 – Creating a budget that works for real life, not just on paper.
Fun in Learning:
To keep things exciting, we introduced games like "Two Truths and a Lie:
Money Edition" and "The Great Allowance Debate", where students
tackled real-life financial dilemmas. The energy was off the charts!
Turning Pocket Money into Wealth: The Secrets of Smart
Investing
With the basics covered, we stepped into the world of
stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. Students learned to decode stock market
trends, analyse risks, and understand the power of compounding.
The Big Takeaways:
- Technical vs. Fundamental Analysis – How investors make smart decisions.
- Portfolio Suitability – Matching investments to different life stages.
- SIPs & Long-Term Wealth Building – How your money can quietly work for you, even while you sleep.
- Stock Market Simulation – Experiencing live investing through multiplayer game.
Students also received a home activity: an Investment
Simulation Excel Sheet, where they could apply their learning to real-world
scenarios.
A Guest Speaker Who Brought Finance to Life
The moment everyone was waiting for—our Industry Expert
& Chief Guest, Mr. Samar Sarda.
With over 20 years of experience in investment banking and
real estate, Mr. Sarda didn’t just talk about finance—he lived it, breathed it,
and even jumped on a table to make his point! Yes, a table! – to
illustrate the risk-reward dynamic, a visual lesson that resonated deeply.
Mr. Sarda, currently Head of Real Estate at MK Ventures
& Consulting and Managing Director at Axis Capital Investment Banking,
shared invaluable insights into capital markets, structured finance, and
strategic investments. His presence was a powerful reminder that finance isn’t
just theory—it’s a dynamic, ever-evolving field with real-world impact.
The Impact: A New Perspective on Money
As the workshop wrapped up, the excitement lingered.
Students weren’t just passive listeners—they were active participants,
debating, questioning, and applying what they learned.
For many, this was the first step toward financial
independence. They left not just with knowledge but with a newfound confidence
in handling money.
